2014 Academy Award Nominations: My Reaction

Posted: January 17, 2014 in award season, just because I can, movies

The Oscar Nominations are in. There are a lot of snubs, some sure things, and one big shocker. Check out my thoughts on this year’s nominations below. For a full list of the nominees, click here.

2014 Academy Award Nominations

Best Picture
 – 12 Years a Slave
– American Hustle
– Captain Phillips
– Dallas Buyers Club
– Gravity
– Her
– Nebraska
– Philomena
– The Wolf of Wall Street

My Reaction
What about Saving Mr. Banks? I really think if you’re going to put Philomena on this list, then you should put Saving Mr. Banks. It was a great movie, with some great acting on Emma Thompson’s part. Every other film on this is expected.

Best Actor
– Christian Bale, American Hustle
– Bruce Dern, Nebraska
– Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
– Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
– Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club

My Reaction
Where is Tom Hanks nomination? Ok, I have no idea which actor I would take out of this category to give the spot to Tom Hanks…but still…I am however REALLY glad to see Leo on this list, but I’m pretty sure Matthew McConaughey will take it.

Best Actress
– Amy Adams, American Hustle
– Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
– Sandra Bullock, Gravity
– Judi Dench, Philomena
– Meryl Streep, August: Osage County

My Reaction
I can’t believe Emma Thompson didn’t get a nomination, but I mean, I guess if Saving Mr. Banks got let out of Best Picture Nod, then Emma Thompson gets left out. I would replace Judi Dench with Emma Thompson. I love Judi Dench, but I’m not a fan of Philomena.

Best Supporting Actor
– Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips
– Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
– Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave
– Jonah Hill, The Wolf of Wall Street
– Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club

My Reaction
Okay, this is where the SHOCKER comes in. Jonah Hill? Seriously? Jonah Hill over Daniel Bruhl in Rush? Hill is obviously the “wild card” here. Now granted Jared should and will take it…but still does the Academy not realize Jonah Hill plays the same annoying, I-want-to-punch-him character in every movie? He was basically his same character in 21 Jump Street.

Best Supporting Actress
– Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine
– Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
– Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave
– Julia Roberts, August: Osage County
– June Squibb, Nebraska

My Reaction
No surprises here. Jennifer Lawrence should take it, but we’ll see how the SAG awards play out. It would be between JLaw or Lupita Nyong’o.

Best Director
– Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
– Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave
– Alexander Payne, Nebraska
– David O. Russell, American Hustle
– Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street

My Reaction
While I like Marty as much as the next person, I believe that Paul Greengrass for Captain Phillips or Spike Jonze for Her, should be on this list over him. Greengrass built such tension with Captain Phillips. I remember even saying “This is so intense” while watching the film. The authenticity of the pirates and the ordeal in which the characters had to endure showcases great directing. If not Greengrass, then Jonze. Her felt new, and original and that’s exciting. The world was unique. It felt old and new at the same time. Jonze directed Joaquin Phoenix into some great work and seamlessly added in Scarlett Johannson’s silky smooth voice after having Phoenix reacting to another actress originally playing the part.

Best Cinematography
– Emmanuel Lubezki, Gravity
– Bruno Delbonnel, Inside Llewyn Davis
– Phedon Papamichael, Nebraska
– Roger Deakins, Prisoners
– Phillipe Le Sourd, The Grandmaster

My Reaction
Okay, so in full disclosure I haven’t seen Nebraska or The Grandmaster. That being said I’m surprised Hoyte Van Hoytema didn’t get a nomination for Her, or Sean Bobbit for 12 Years A Slave, or Andrew Lesnie for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.

Best Costume Design
– Catherine Martin, The Great Gatsby
– Patricia Norris, 12 Years a Slave
– William Chang Suk Ping, The Grandmaster
– Michael Wilkinson, American Hustle
– Michael O’Conner, The Invisible Woman

My Reaction
So…how did The Hunger Games: Catching Fire not get a nomination? Those costumes are amazing, and we all know how I feel about the sweater. But a lot of it is avant garde and frankly breathtaking. So why no love? And what the heck is The Invisible Woman?

Best Make-Up and Hairstyling
– Joel Harlow and Gloria Pasqua Casny, The Lone Ranger
– Stephen Prouty , Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa
– Adruitha Lee and Robin Matthews, Dallas Buyers Club

My Reaction
Again, with only three nominations, again no love for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire? I mean…click here and tell me this isn’t deserving of a make-up nomination.

What are your thoughts on this year’s nominees? Who do you think got snubbed? Why do you think Jonah Hill was nominated? Do you think this could be Leonardo DiCaprio’s year or will Matthew McConaughey take it? And will I ever be able to spell McConaughey’s name without having to look up how to spell it every single time?
