The 2013 Oscar’s are tomorrow and I cannot wait! Check out who I think will win vs. who should win. And tune in Sunday for the winners! It’s gonna be a great show (at least I hope so!)

The Nominations

Best Picture

  • Amour
  • Argo
  • Beasts of the Southern Wild
  • Life of Pi
  • Lincoln
  • Silver Linings Playbook
  • Django Unchained
  • Zero Dark Thirty
  • Les Miserables

What Should Win: ARGO
What WILL Win: ARGO
Thoughts: Since The Impossible didn’t make this list, Argo is definitely my vote for favorite movie. It was exciting and thrilling and just a well-made movie. It also seems to have gained more heat with the fact that Ben Affleck was SNUBBED as director. If anything else wins I’d be very surprised.

Best Actor In A Leading Role

  • Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook
  • Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln
  • Hugh Jackman, Les Miserables
  • Joaquin Phoenix, The Master
  • Denzel Washington, Flight

Who Should Win: Bradley Cooper
Who WILL Win: Daniel Day-Lewis
Thoughts: This one is a tough category because all these actors did an amazing job. I’m partial to Bradley Cooper winning because I really enjoyed his performance in SLP. Daniel Day-Lewis was no doubt AMAZING as Lincoln, but the movie was just ok.

Best Actress In A Leading Role

  • Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty
  • Quvenzhane Wallis, Beasts of the Southern Wild
  • Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook
  • Naomi Watts, The Impossible
  • Emmanuelle Riva, Amour

Who Should Win: Naomi Watts
Who WILL Win: Jennifer Lawrence
Thoughts: Okay, so I won’t be upset if Jennifer Lawrence wins. She did an incredible job with Tiffany in SLP. It may even be my favorite performance from her so far, however, what Naomi Watts did in The Impossible was nothing short of Oscar worthy. Unfortunately to say she is the underdog would be an understatement.

Best Actor In A Supporting Role

  • Alan Arkin, Argo
  • Robert De Niro, Silver Linings Playbook
  • Philip Seymour Hoffman, The Master
  • Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln
  • Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained

Who Should Win: Christoph Waltz
Who WILL win: Christoph Waltz or Tommy Lee Jones
Thoughts: Christoph Waltz was great in Django and he’s already won some awards for his performance. I feel like there’s been mummerings surrounding Tommy Lee Jones and he could come from behind.

Best Actor In A Supporting Role

  • Amy Adams, The Master
  • Sally Field, Lincoln
  • Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables
  • Helen Hunt, The Sessions
  • Jacki Weaver, Silver Linings Playbook

Who Should Win: Anne Hathaway
Who WILL Win: Anne Hathaway
Thoughts: I don’t know what’s happened with AH, but she seems to have gotten very cocky, and melodramatic, especially when she gives her speeches. They don’t come off as genuine. But no matter the fact if you hate her, you can’t deny she gave an Oscar Worthy performance in Les Mis. I know people make fun of her for that performance, but ridicule means you’re doing something right? She should and will win. Haters gonna hate. Yeah, I said it.

Best Animated Feature Film

  • Brave
  • Frankenweenie
  • ParaNorman
  • Pirates! Band of Misfits
  • Wreck It Ralph

What Should Win: Wreck It Ralph
What WILL Win: Brave
Thoughts: Though I feel like Frankenweenie is an Oscar darling thanks to Tim Burton, I feel like Brave is the front runner. I mean it was gorgeous for crying out loud. However, I feel like of these movies, Wreck-It-Ralph is hands down my favorite.

Best Cinematography

  • Seamus McGarvey, Anna Karenina
  • Robert Richardson, Django Unchained
  • Claudio Miranda, Life of Pi
  • Janusz Kaminski, Lincoln
  • Roger Deakins, Skyfall

Who Should Win: Robert Richardson
Who WILL Win: Claudio Miranda
Thoughts: I admit it, Life if Pi is gorgeous, beautiful, insert other synonyms here. He helped created a stunning film despite difficult circumstances. However, on the other end of the spectrum is Robert Richardson, he filters everything on the day. No color correction in post necessary. That in itself is amazing. Plus…this…Go Bob!

Best Directing

  • Michael Haneke, Amour
  • Benh Zeitlin, Beasts Of The Southern Wild
  • Ang Lee, Life of Pi
  • Steven Spielberg, Lincoln
  • David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook

Who Should Win: David O. Russell or Benh Zeitlin
Who WILL Win: David O. Russell or Steven Spielberg
Thoughts: Ok, this is hard because I feel like Affleck should be the winner hands down. But out of these people what Zeitlin did with Quvenzhane Wallis was fantastic. She gave a great performance. It was a tough movie over all but directed well. The same can be said about David O. Russell and Spielberg, they got great performances from their actors, but Silver Linings is the better movie.

Best Writing – Adapted Screenplay

  • Chris Terrino, Argo
  • Lucy Alibar, Benh Zeitlin, Beasts of the Southern Wild
  • David Magee, Life of Pi
  • Tony Kushner, Lincoln
  • David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook

Who Should Win: Chris Terrino, Argo
Who WILL Win: Chris Terrino, Argo, or David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook
Thoughts: I think you know why.

Best Writing – Original Screenplay

  • Mark Boal, Zero Dark Thirty
  • Wes Anderson, Roman Coppola, Moonrise Kingdom
  • John Gatins, Flight
  • Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained
  • Michael Haneke, Amour

Who Should Win: Django Unchained
Who WILL Win: Django Unchained
Thoughts: This is a tricky category. I know Django was hit or miss as a movie for a lot of people. But you have to admit, even if some of the action was skeptical, the writing was fantastic. Those words Christoph Waltz streamed together were magnificent and came out like butter. And those long speeches Tarantino is known for were smart, captivating as well as entertaining and funny. Also: “I count six bullets.” “I count two guns.” ‘Nuff said.

You can check out the other nominations here. What do you think? Who should win. Are you as excited for the Oscars as I am? Happy Watching!

  1. I’m not particularly excited about the Oscars, but I usually am not about awards ceremonies. I like most of your picks for what “will” win. These things can be somewhat predictable. Would you be surprised if Les Mis’ took the Best Picture?

    • Well if you go according to the “buzz” Les Mis kind of a dark horse wild card. Argo has been sweeping all the award ceremonies so if it doesn’t win I’ll be very surprised and upset. If Argo doesn’t win, I think it’ll be between Silver Linings and Les Mis.
