Butter

Starring: Jennifer Gardner, Olivia Wilde, Ty Burrell, Alicia Silverstone, Yara Shahidi, Rob Corddry, Hugh Jackman, Ashley Greene

Premise: When the 15 year reigning Butter Sculpting Champion (you read me!) is forced to retire, his wife Laura (Jennifer Gardner), ambitious and probably psychotic, takes his place in order to keep the award and it’s benefits in the family. However, things get complicated when an adopted 10 year old black girl enters the competition with natural talent. There’s also an adulterous husband and a revenge seeking stripper.

My Review: Laura takes her job as the wife of a Butter Carving Champ seriously, treating it like a political campaign. She’s controlling, obnoxious, pushy, and alienates everyone in her family. When her husband cheats on her with a stripper (Olivia Wilde), Laura takes the competition into her own hands demanding everyone stay by her side just as she’s done so diligently. Only its butter….BUTTER! And while half of the cast takes the butter carving competition seriously, the other half (and the audiences) acknowledges how ridiculous it is. And while I get it’s supposed to be “stylistic” or “quirky” or “eccentric”,  the movie never quite figures out what it is. Half of the characters are relatively normal, and the other half are, well, flat out bonkers.

This movie did indeed have some funny and ridiculous moments, but I didn’t like it as much as some people. Mostly because Laura Pickler had ZERO redeeming qualities. While Jennifer Gardner perfectly acted the role, there was not one thing to like about her character. I did however like Alicia Silverstone and an unusually sweet and genuine, Rob Corddry. The movie also made me crave bread…

Rating: 2 ½ Stars.
